You will find owner Bob Cammisa in any one of the five repair bays at 344 River Road, leading his team of trained professional mechanics in full-service auto repair. Cammisa’s Garage has expanded their business to include quality used cars, and each car has been examined by Cammisa’s expert mechanics with as much attention to detail as the cars of the customers they have served for 70 years. “I am proud to be able to grow our business in a business-friendly community, dealing with some of the nicest people here,” Bob Cammisa stated. “Shelton has been good to our family and our business, and we look forward to another 70-plus years.” The mechanics at Cammisa’s Garage serve Fairfield County and the lower Naugatuck Valley.
In the 1920s, Joseph Cammisa left his assembly-line job at the General Motors plant in Tarrytown, New York, and moved with his wife Antoinette to the prospering community of Shelton, Connecticut, to be closer to their family. Joe began working at Tisi Oil Company, and Antoinette found work alongside her brother Al at the Chromium Process Factory. Joe and Antoinette worked hard and raised their family in Shelton, where they formed strong community bonds.
In 1949, Joe opened his own auto repair business with his son Patrick. Joe’s Service Station and Gulf Oil was opened on Bridgeport Avenue where they offered gas and general auto repair. The mechanics spent many years on Bridgeport Ave before moving their auto repair service to Route 110 and renaming the business Cammisa’s Garage after the father-son mechanics. Patrick’s son Bob joined the family business when he was just 14, first pumping gas for customers and soon learning auto repair. After years of building his reputation as an expert mechanic, Bob took over the family business, and for 30 years he has offered the same friendly and professional auto repair service his grandfather offered the Shelton community in 1949.
